Edinburgh-based Planet Kuku, which describes itself as the home of the 100 per cent plant-based frittata, has used funding from DSL Business Finance to move into new rented premises, fit-out a kitchen and as a source of working capital.
Family business Planet Kuku was set up in 2017 by Mateusz Noniewicz and Maria Janowczyk, originally from Poland.
Planet Kuku bills itself as a business born out of a passion for plant-based food prepared with fresh and nutritious ingredients. In the spring, its aubergine kuku won a gold medal in the Artisan Foods category and its cauliflower kuku took silver in the Vegan Snacks & Meals Ideas category at the UK FreeFrom Food Awards.
Moving to new premises this year has allowed the business to grow production from 40 kukus per day to 160 – a 400% increase. Planet Kuku can also now satisfy larger orders from existing retailers, such as Margiotta and Real Foods, and cafes, as well as work towards Safe and Local Supplier Approval (SALSA) accreditation.
Mateusz said: “The support of DSL Business Finance has allowed us to expand our business and offer our award-winning kukus to a much larger customer base.”
