Name: Nicola Cosgrove
Role: Investment Readiness Officer
What do you do at SMF?
My role is to assess loan applications for potential clients. This includes meeting all clients and giving them support and guidance to ensure they have the best opportunity of securing funding. In the last 12 months, with the growth of DSL, I have been involved in the support and mentoring of new loan officers and assisting them settle into the role. I am also involved with promoting DSL/SMF to other organisations and the wider community.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love having the opportunity to help people realise their dreams by setting up their own business. I’m exposed to a diverse range of businesses and people who all have the vision and enthusiasm to follow their dream.
What’s your background?
I have been with DSL for nearly ten years. Prior to this I worked in the banking sector for almost as long, starting my career through the Lloyds TSB Scotland graduate scheme. After I graduated, I was in a variety of roles, from being a branch manager in personal banking to being a business relationship manager with Bank of Scotland, managing a portfolio of small business clients.
What one piece of financial advice would you give business owners?
Cash is king. Without ensuring your customers pay you when they should, then you cannot pay your suppliers or yourself. Without strong cash flow the business will come tumbling down!
If you started a business, what would it be?
I admire people who set up their own business; it can definitely be a daunting prospect, and the market may prove to be challenging. What I enjoy the most is being able to provide the support and guidance to enable other people to fulfil their dreams. It’s very rewarding to see the positive outcome of our support. If I had to choose, it would probably be to establish an animal café but I’d really much prefer to continue doing what I do in supporting others.
