Name: Sandra McLean
Job title: Fund Manager
What’s your role at DSL, and within SMF? Tell us about your role.
My role at DSL is quite versatile and involves numerous different tasks. I manage DSL’s bank accounts, as well as third party loan funds and report on their portfolios. Reviewing policies and procedures to ensure all loan documentation is up-to-date and compliant are essential parts of my role in order to help businesses continue their growth and gain access to the right funding.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the variety of my job the most. My role has so many different strands and responsibilities that no two days are the same. I love working with the entrepreneurs who apply for loans with SMF – hearing their stories and ideas is very inspiring. It definitely gives a sense of purpose and a human aspect for what we do.
What’s your background?
I have now worked for DSL for 21 years, so I like to think I learned on the job. I have basically covered the majority of job roles within DSL, starting off as administrator which gave me a good insight into the basics of running an efficient office, moving onto debt recovery, then loan officer and finally fund manager.
What one piece of financial advice would you give business owners?
Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves! I think a lot of entrepreneurs are very good at the practical side of what they do and within their chosen sector but don’t really focus enough on the financial management of the business. There is a lot of help and support out there for both new and existing business which clients could and should tap into e.g. Business Gateway & Scottish Enterprise.
If you started a business, what would it be?
Years ago, I had an idea about collapsible high heels that you could easily turn into flats for women on the go. The concept of bringing business wear and comfort together would be appealing to many women, including myself. It was such a good concept, however, that a few companies have beaten me to it!
What’s the most interesting business you’ve ever supported?
This is a difficult question, as there are so many businesses that I have supported over the years. However, there is a local scaffolding business that I have worked with over the past 20 years. The owner of this particular business has had eight loans from us, which is quite rare in our sector. The funds were required to purchase additional stock which assisted in the growth of the business. The client has often said that he likes the personal contact that DSL provides when working with us.
